Serena Williams wins the US Open- her 18th Grand Slam title

Serena Williams wins US Open and 18th Grand Slam title

Tennis superstar Serena Williams made light work of defeating Caroline Wozniacki to notch up her sixth US Open victory, taking her Grand Slam victories up to 18.

Ms, Williams took very little time to win the title in straight sets, 6-3 6-3 at the awe-inspiring Flushing Meadows arena in New York.

After the final got off to a sluggish start with both players, it was Ms. Williams who was the first to steady herself. When she did she rapidly wrapped up the first set and even began to approach some of her most powerful form to almost totally dominate the second to win with plenty to spare.

Serena’s well earned victory now takes her to joint-fourth place in the list of all-time winners, alongside greats Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

This year’s victory was Ms Williams third successive US Open title, as well as the scene of her first Grand Slam triumph 15 years ago, and more than making up for her shock defeat in the 2011 final against Australia’s Sam Stosur.

Serena Williams kicked off the tournament in New York with a question mark over her head after having failed to make it past the fourth round of all of this season’s Grand Slam competitions. However, during the entire two weeks at Flushing Meadows, Serena certainly looked as if she stepped up a gear winning the title without dropping a set, or indeed more than three games in any single set.

Caroline Wozniacki, who started the competition as 10th seed, flattered to deceive in the early stages of the match, although as Ms Williams began to turn on the power, she was gradually forced to make full advantage of her impressive athletic defensive skills to stem the constant attacking force of the American.

With eighteen Grand Slam wins under her bed, Serena Williams, at 33, has certainly reached the veteran stage and it remains a subject of considerable conjecture in the world of tennis whether she has enough power to overtake Steffi Graf’s 22 Grand Slam wins even more so of the great Australian, Margaret Court’s 24. For the meantime surpassing Helen Wills Moody 19 titles may still be in her sights.

Apart from her six US open victories Serena Williams’s has won Wimbledon on five occasions, also picking up five Australian Open trophies as well as the French Open twice.
