Lewis Hamilton pulls away from the field in Singapore

After a long season fought by a string of breakdowns and an ongoing battle, on and off track, with his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton began to look more like a world champion as he has done for a very long time, winning yesterday’s Singapore Grand Prix in some style.

Hamilton’s victory means that he now leads the championship race, albeit by just three points with five races remaining, Nico Rosberg was forced to retire after an electrical system failure, for the second time this year and see his championship lead, which, at one time, stood at 22-points be finally overtaken largely as a result of Hamilton’s never say die approach.

Starting from pole position Hamilton was in command throughout at the Marina Bay Street Circuit track, although he briefly lost his lead to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel after making his final pit stop, but rapidly recovered to take his seventh win of the season.

Vettel had to make with second after a tight battle between his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, with Alonso taking fourth. Behind Alonso, Williams’s Felipe Massa made his tyres last to avoid a final pit stop to take fifth.

As has become almost a recurring occasion at the Marina Bay Street Circuit the services of the safety car was required, this time on lap 31 following a collision between Force India’s Sergio Perez and Sauber’s Adrian Sutil, which saw Perez’s front wing breaking off, leaving debris strewn across the track.

After the race Rosberg did admit that the atmosphere between the two drivers as well as the entire Mercedes team remained “intense” but, at least in public view, both Mercedes drivers were clearly attempting to project a more relaxed outward image in the Camo, with the German stating that at this point in the championship it’s clear that the focus needs to be more winning races and points instead of arguments.
