Demand for domain names reach new heights

According to a recent report from domain name giants VeriSign, the ever growing flow of Internet traffic numbering in the billions, has caused unrelenting demand for domain names with the total number of top level domains registered on the World Wide Web having reached 276 million in the first quarter of, representing a 7.5 percent increase from the same period last year.

Five million new domain names have been added to the Internet during the quarter of this year, proclaimed VeriSign in a recent statement, while the most in demand top-level domains (TLDs).com and .net TLDs reach 128.5 million during that period, an increase of four percent on a year on year basis. Out of the total .com sites, close to 70 percent of them are in English, according to VeriSign.

New .com and .net registrations totaled 8.6 million during the three-month period, the company stated.

According to industry analysts the influence of Internet growing at an unprecedented pace due to the need for connections no longer being confined to PCs and laptops, with the public as well as the business community increasingly accessing the web through smartphones and tablets and more comfortable making use of online platforms such as E-commerce websites for earning money and conducting business online, as well as visiting the ever-growing family of social networking sites, which together boast more than one billion active users on a daily basis.
